Sandra Day O’Connor is the first

xSandra Day O'Connor

Sandra Day O’Connor is a retired Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. She served from her appointment on this date in 1981 by Ronald Regan until her retirement in 2006. She was the first woman to be appointed to the Court.

Progress has been made, although slowly. There have been three women who have served on the Supreme Court in addition to Sandra Day O’Connor: Sonia Sotomayor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Elena Kagan. I say slowly, because no female justice has been added since Elena Kagan’s 2010 investiture.
