This day in history…rubber and margarine patented

Vulcanized rubber is patented by Goodyear in 1844.

And, margarine is patented in 1869.  Margarine originated with the discovery by a French chemist in 1813. Emperor Napoleon III of France offered a prize to anyone who could make a satisfactory butter alternative, suitable for use by the armed forces and the lower classes. Hippolyte Mege-Mouries, a French chemist, invented a substance he called oleomargarine, shortened to the trade name margarine.
