Olympics and Twinkies


The first modern Olympic Games or Olympics opened this date in Athens, Greece in 1896. The Olympics are leading international sporting events featuring summer and winter sports competitions in which thousands of athletes from around the world participate in a variety of competitions. The Olympic Games are considered the world’s foremost sports competition with more than 200 nations participating.  The Olympic Games are held every four years, with the Summer and Winter Games alternating by occurring every four years but two years apart.

Their creation was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games, which were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894. Twinkies, an American snack cake, hit the market this date in 1930. Originally banana filled, Twinkies are sponge cakes with cream filling. During bankruptcy proceedings, Twinkie production was suspended on November 21, 2012, and resumed after an absence of several months from American store shelves, becoming available again nationwide on July 15, 2013. Owned by Hostess Brands, they are produced in Canada at a bakery that owns the Canadian rights to the product. Twinkies are also available in Mexican stores, as well as Egypt, the United Kingdom, Ireland and China. (from Wikipedia)
