WW I-pixabay

On this day in history, World War I began in 1914 and became known as the Great War because of its global cast. Triggered by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria by a Yugoslav nationalist, the diplomatic crisis caused international alliances in place over decades to be invoked. Within weeks, the major powers were at war, and it spread around the world.

It was one of the deadliest conflicts in history with the introduction of mechanized warfare: casualties and losses totaled almost 39,000,000 people. It paved the way for major political change, like the revolution in Russia that led to the death of Czar Nicholas and his family. By the end of the war, the German Empire, Russian Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Ottoman Empire ceased to exist. The results of the treaty terms of this war eventually contributed to World War II. (parts from Wikipedia and me)
